SAFETY TIPS & ROUTE NOTES

Arterial Crossings: All major intersections have full signals or pedestrian signals—larger intersections include Curtis, Orchard, Vista and Federal Way. Wait for the green signal or walk sign and make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
Special Route Considerations:
Bikeway Jogs: at some of the arterial crossings, the bikeway does a short jog. Pay attention to the signs, cues, and where the pedestrian signals are located to stay on the route.
While this is a low stress bikeway, traffic can pick up during peak hours and school start and end times.
The route terminates at the Federal Way Bike Path which is on the opposite side of the intersection at Federal Way. To access the path, you will need to cross Federal Way, which is a busy intersection. You may want to use the pedestrian crosswalk when crossing this street and be mindful of drivers turning.
Bicycling Infrastracture Tips:
Shared Lane Markings or "Sharrows": This route includes streets with shared lane markings or "sharrows". Ride in the center of the lane where sharrows are marked, especially if the lane is too narrow for a bike and car to share side by side. Be visible and predictable.
Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons or "HAWK" Signals: Press the push button and wait for the walk sign to turn on. Drivers are expected to stop when the light becomes red. Make sure they have stopped before proceeding through the intersection.
Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB): Activate the RRFB by pressing the push button before crossing. Wait for traffic to yield, make sure all lanes are clear, and then cross carefully—stay alert even when drivers are slowing down.
