SAFETY TIPS & ROUTE NOTES
  • Arterial Crossings:  All major intersections are signalized—larger intersections include Myrtle, Front, and State Streets downtown. Wait for the green signal or walk sign and make eye contact with drivers before crossing.

  • Pathway Etiquette: The Greenbelt is a happening place! Slow your roll, stay right, pass with care (on the left), and use a bell or say “on your left.”

  • Bicycling Downtown: Downtown Boise is the place to be! When riding, stay alert for turning vehicles, people opening car doors, and pedestrians. Ride in a straight line, avoid weaving between cars, and use hand signals clearly.

  • Special Route Considerations:

    • Out and Backs: this route includes several short out and back portions in order to showcase public art, vibrant streets and murals.  This includes Grove Street (Neon Sign Museum), the Basque Block (Grove Street), JUMP campus, and Freak Alley along 8th Street. Check your map and pay attention to the cues.

    • Between Main & Bannock, 8th Street is a pedestrian street. Bicyclists are welcome but take it slow and enjoy the experience.

    • The 11th Street Bikeway and Grove Street in downtown include protected bike lanes located next to the sidewalk. Watch for pedestrians and people exiting parked cars.

  • Construction Alerts: Detours are in place near the Anne Frank Memorial; be prepared to merge with traffic and follow the detour signs as applicable.

  • Bicycling Infrastracture Tips:

    • Shared Lane Markings or "Sharrows": This route includes streets with shared lane markings or "sharrows". Ride in the center of the lane where sharrows are marked, especially if the lane is too narrow for a bike and car to share side by side. Be visible and predictable.

    • Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons or "HAWK" Signals: Press the push button and wait for the walk sign to turn on.  Drivers are expected to stop when the light becomes red. Make sure they have stopped before proceeding through the intersection.

    • Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB): Activate the RRFB by pressing the push button before crossing. Wait for traffic to yield, make sure all lanes are clear, and then cross carefully—stay alert even when drivers are slowing down.
